Chicken Offal Prices in Zimbabwe: Feet, Gizzards, Livers and Necks
In Zimbabwe, chicken feet, gizzards, livers, and necks are not just by-products of the poultry sector. Millions of households across the country see these cuts as the most affordable protein and as a delicacy. These portions are key ingredients in the popular Gango β a beloved dish with mixed meats, fried in one skillet and served with sadza.
Understanding how chicken offal prices are determined in different provinces provides essential market intelligence for poultry farmers and commercial processers, who are looking to achieve maximum revenue per bird. Read on to discover what drives the offal market in Harare, Bulawayo, and other locations.
Why Offal Prices Vary Across Zimbabwe
There are three main factors that determine chicken offal prices in different provinces. One, the country’s commercial poultry production is concentrated in Harare, particularly at Irvine’s Zimbabwe in Waterfalls, and in Bulawayo. Therefore, buyers who reside far from major processing facilities are likely to pay more per kg for offal meat. Transportation costs make the selling price 10-25% higher than what consumers pay in Harare.
Two, since offal products are highly perishable, with a shelf life of 24 – 48 hours – unfrozen, sellers need cold-chain access. For Gweru, Masvingo, and Mutare, offal cuts have to be delivered frozen in dedicated delivery vehicles. This limitation affects the final selling price.
And three, local demand culture plays a huge role in setting the prices. If residents of a particular town or neighborhood have higher than usual demand for necks and gizzards, this may result in higher prices for the offal market.
What Drives Chicken Offal Prices: A Cut-by-cut analysis
Each type of chicken offal appeals to the market in a unique way. We now are going to have a close look at the different levels of demand for each cut and how this pushes the price.
Feet
Due to street food culture in urban Zimbabwe, chicken feet are the most in-demand product. For example, in Mbare, Harareβs bustling marketplace, feet are boiled and sold from dawn to dusk. 1,000 birds produce 60 to 80kg. With a retail price range of $1.20 to $20 and a wholesale price of up to $1.10, they can give processors significant revenue. Nonetheless, chicken offal prices are seasonal.
Gizzards
Chicken gizzards are the most versatile meat – a key Gango ingredient, defining street food culture. This cut can be slow-cooked at home but you can also find them braaied on skewers. Retail prices for this premium cut range from $1.80 to $2.80 but at wholesale, you would pay $1.20 to $1.80 per kg. See our Harareβs Top Chicken Spots article for insights into where gango operatorsbuyfrom.
Livers
Chicken livers serve as a cheap protein in the household. But, restaurants also use the cut in peri-peri dishes. One challenge is that livers only have a 24 hour shelf. But OK, Choppies, and Spar sell packaged livers daily at a mid prices of $1.50 to $2.50 per kg. Understanding poultry production costs is key to pricing livers effectively.
Necks
Retailing at $0.80 to $1.50 per kg, chicken necks are the most affordable offal product. Wholesale prices are pretty low at $0.35 to $0.65 per kg. This cut is ideal for soup stocks and is mostly consumed in homes or at boarding schools with sadza. Farmers can explore institutional channels through the buyers directory or ZFU provincial offices in the farmers directory.

The Chicken Offal Market across Zimbabwe’s Provinces
All across the country, Zimbabweans consume a significant amount of chicken offal. And within each province, this special meat is available at open-air entertainment spots that serve sadza and gango. Offal meat has also found a home at butcheries and supermarkets, where it is sold fresh or frozen.
Harare and Bulawayo offer the highest volumes of offal, selling the product fresh, and at competitive prices. Here, gizzards, feet, and livers move really quick at both conventional and informal butcheries. As major metropolises, these areas also have the busiest gango and braai spots.
Other regions follow the lead, with Gweru and Kwekwe, in the Midlands, selling mostly frozen gizzards and livers at slightly higher prices. In Masvingo, there is demand from both everyday households and tourist-attracting venues near the Great Zimbabwe monuments.

The Ultimate Province-by-Province Guide to Chicken offal Markets
A lot of backyard broiler growers usually put their entire batch on the market as live birds. Nonetheless, farmers who slaughter and process their flocks can unlock additional earnings by selling chicken offal portions separately. Gizzards, livers, and feet have a lucrative market in Zimbabwe.
Every town has a selection of butcheries, supermarkets, and open-air braai spots that offer chicken offal. But demand for poultry by-products depends on the food culture within various communities. Here is a breakdown of key market information across all provinces in Zimbabwe to help make smarter decisions about where to sell your product.
Where Chicken Offal Sells in Zimbabwe
We all know that chicken offal cuts have a special place on the Zimbabwean hearts and out dinner tables. It is fairly easy to move the product in large volumes of you know where to sell. There are three different entities that are ready to buy fresh or frozen offal at wholesale.
Today, the country is home to hundreds of conventional butcheries. You can also find tons of informal butcheries and wet markets everywhere. Most importantly, there are plenty of sadza-and-gango places in every city, town or settlement.
If you are a farmer or processor trying to move offal in large volumes, go through the province-by-province market analysis for more information. You can also connect through the buyers directory, breeders and suppliers page, and farmers directory on this site.
Province 1: Harare Region – National Benchmark
Harare sets the chicken offal price that all other provinces reference. Gango culture here is at its most developed, with street-side butcheries, open fires, and dedicated gango restaurants that draw hundreds of customers on weekends. Feet are boiled at Mbare Musika from dawn, gizzards braaied at evening spots in Sunridge and Highfield, and livers pan-fried in CBD eateries. Supermarkets in the northern suburbs also stock offal.

Province 2: Bulawayo Region – Zimbabwe’s second offal market
Bulawayo has its own deeply established gango tradition. In Nkulumane, Cowdray Park, Luveve, and Pumula, open-fire butcheries and braai spots serve gango with sadza every weekend. The city’s events venues and restaurant sector are consistent bulk buyers of gizzards and feet. Offal arrives partly fresh from Harare and partly from local informal slaughter β fresh local product commands a clear premium.
The braai venue and township butchery market in Bulawayo is underserved for reliable weekly gizzard and feet supply. A Bulawayo-based processor with local slaughter capacity can compete directly on freshness and undercut Harare-sourced frozen product on price.

Province 3: Midlands Region – Gweru and Kwekwe
Gweru and Kwekwe have active and growing gango cultures in their high-density suburbs, so, offal demand is consistent. Feet and gizzards move quickly from braai spots and butcheries on weekends. Cold-chain infrastructure is limited compared to the main cities, which means locally slaughtered fresh offal has a clear competitive advantage over frozen product arriving from Harare.
Midlands farmers with local slaughter capacity can command a freshness premium of $0.20β$0.40 per kg on feet and gizzards over frozen Harare product. Weekend braai operators in Mkoba and Amaveni are the most direct route to consistent volume sales.
Sadza & Gango Spots
- Traxion (Gweru) β major events venue and bulk catering operation. One of the largest single buyers of gizzards and feet in the Midlands. Verified buyer on this site.

Province 4: Masvingo Region Tourism, Hospitality & Household demand
Masvingo’s offal market is driven by two distinct customer types: the tourism and hospitality sector around Great Zimbabwe and Lake Mutirikwe, and the everyday household and informal food market in Masvingo town itself. Sadza and gango culture is active in the Mucheke and Rujeko suburbs, though at lower volume than the larger cities. Almost all offal currently arrives from Harare.
A Masvingo-based farmer delivering fresh gizzards and livers to the Great Zimbabwe hospitality corridor competes against product carrying the full cost of a 300 km cold-chain journey from Harare β a price gap of $0.30β$0.50 per kg available to capture.
Sadza & Gango Spots
- Mucheke and Rujeko braai and sadza spots β Masvingo town’s main high-density suburbs. Informal open-fire gango operators active on weekends, buying feet and gizzards from local butcheries or nearby farmers.

Province 5: Mashonaland East, West & Central
The Mashonaland regions form a dense ring of periurban towns around Harare β Norton, Ruwa, Chitungwiza, Marondera, Bindura, Chinhoyi β with growing populations, expanding small food businesses, and strong sadza-and-gango culture. Proximity to Harare means fresh offal is accessible, but local farmers can still compete effectively on freshness and direct-supply relationships with township braai operators and butcheries.
Chitungwiza is one of Zimbabwe’s most underrated offal markets. With a population exceeding 300,000 and a dense concentration of township braai and sadza operators, consistent fresh supply into Chitungwiza’s butcheries is a significant commercial opportunity for any Harare-area processor or nearby farmer.
Sadza & Gango Spots
- Jongwe Corner (Chinhoyi) β well-known bulk braai and events operator. Regular gizzard and feet buyer. Verified buyer on this site.
- Chitungwiza sadza and gango spots (Units A, B, C, D, J and St Mary’s) β with a population over 300,000, Chitungwiza has arguably the densest concentration of informal gango and sadza operators in Zimbabwe outside Harare proper. Open-fire braai and sadza stalls operate Thursday through Sunday across the township. This is a major and largely undocumented offal end-use market.
- Norton and Ruwa township braai operators β active weekend gango culture. Braai operators buy feet and gizzards in small weekly lots from Harare-area processors or local farmers.
- Marondera, Bindura, and Shamva sadza spots β town-based informal food operators serving local communities and the surrounding farming population. Feet and necks dominate in these markets.
- Domboshava and Goromonzi braai operators β peri-rural braai culture at growth points, buying small weekly lots of offal from local farmers or passing traders.
Supermarkets & Butcheries
- OK Zimbabwe, Choppies, and Spar (Norton, Ruwa, Marondera, Bindura, Chinhoyi branches) β packaged offal as regular retail stock.
- Chitungwiza township butcheries β dozens of small operators across all Chitungwiza units stocking fresh offal for the town’s large daily household market. Many combine retail butchery with on-site braai and gango cooking.
- Norton, Ruwa, and Domboshava butcheries β growing periurban operators where fresh supply from nearby Harare-area processors can be delivered same-day.
- Marondera and Bindura community butcheries β small-town operators serving farming district communities consistently. Mayo Butchery (Headlands) is representative of the type of small but consistent rural-town butchery active across this corridor.

Province 6: Manicaland Region – Mutare
Manicaland’s offal market centres on Mutare, with secondary demand in Rusape, Chipinge, and Nyanga. Sadza and gango culture is well established in Mutare’s high-density suburbs of Dangamvura, Chikanga, and Sakubva. Proximity to the Mozambique border creates some informal cross-border demand. Almost all offal currently arrives from Harare, giving locally slaughtered fresh product a significant price and freshness advantage that no current supplier is fully capturing.
A farmer or small processor in Mutare or Rusape delivering fresh gizzards and livers to Sakubva’s butcheries and braai operators competes against product carrying the full cost of a 260 km journey from Harare β a price gap of at least $0.30β$0.50 per kg available to capture.
Sadza & Gango Spots
- Sakubva market braai and sadza spots β Mutare’s largest high-density suburb. Open-fire gango and sadza stalls operate daily in and around Sakubva market, buying feet and gizzards in 10β30 kg lots. One of the most active informal offal end-use markets in Manicaland.
- Dangamvura and Chikanga township gango operators β weekend braai and sadza culture active across both suburbs, which together house the majority of Mutare’s working population. Gango with gizzards and feet cooked every Friday through Sunday.
- Rusape informal food market β sadza and gango sold from informal stalls serving surrounding farming communities and transit trade on the HarareβMutare highway.
- Nyanga and Vumba lodge kitchens β Eastern Highlands hospitality operators serving livers and gizzards in traditional menus for guests.
- Chipinge town food stalls β sadza and offal sold to the tea estate worker population and town residents. Consistent low-volume demand for feet and necks.
Supermarkets & Butcheries
- OK Zimbabwe and Choppies (Mutare branches) β packaged offal stocked regularly, sourced from Harare cold-chain.
- Mutare CBD butcheries β operators along Robert Mugabe Way and Herbert Chitepo Street stocking fresh offal for mid-market household buyers.
- Sakubva market butcheries β informal and small-scale operators serving Sakubva’s household market with fresh feet, gizzards, and necks. The closest thing to Harare’s Mbare Musika in Manicaland terms of daily offal trade.
- Rusape, Chipinge, Nyazura, and Headlands butcheries β small-town operators serving their communities consistently. Chipinge has particular demand from the tea estate worker population.

Province 7: Matebeleland North & South – Beitbridge and Gwanda
Matebeleland’s offal market is the most remote from national processing centres. Beitbridge, as Zimbabwe’s busiest border town, has distinctive character: the large transient truck and trading population creates steady offal demand seven days a week. Hwange’s mining population and Victoria Falls’ tourism trade drive consistent demand in the North. Gwanda and surrounds have stable household demand for feet and necks. All offal currently transported from Harare or Bulawayo, meaning local farmers have the most dramatic cost advantage of any province in Zimbabwe.
Matebeleland prices run 15β25% above Harare wholesale due to transport distance. A local Beitbridge or Gwanda farmer processing birds on-site and supplying fresh offal to town butcheries and braai operators has the strongest natural price advantage of any producer in Zimbabwe. The border town demand at Beitbridge alone justifies a dedicated local supply operation.
Sadza & Gango Spots
- Beitbridge Dulivhadzimu township sadza and braai spots β concentrated along the approaches to the border crossing and through the township. Transient trucker and trader population creates demand every day. Boiled feet and gizzard gango are the dominant offal products. Operators buy in small daily lots from local butcheries or occasional traders from Bulawayo.
- Gwanda and Tongwe braai spots β weekend braai culture in Gwanda’s high-density suburbs. Feet and gizzards bought in small lots from local butcheries or directly from farms.
- Hwange town food stalls β the coal-mining population supports consistent demand for affordable sadza and offal. Boiled feet and neck soup are popular as budget daily meals for mine workers.
- Victoria Falls lodge and restaurant kitchens (Matebeleland North) β tourism sector purchasing livers and gizzards for both traditional Zimbabwean cuisine dishes and adapted menus for international guests.
- Hwange National Park lodge kitchens β hospitality buyers serving offal in traditional Zimbabwean meal options alongside game meat menus.
Supermarkets & Butcheries
- Choppies and OK Zimbabwe (Beitbridge and Gwanda branches) β packaged offal stocked as regular items, primarily transported frozen from Harare or Bulawayo. Shelf prices reflect the full transport cost premium.
- Beitbridge town butcheries β several informal and semi-formal butcheries serving Dulivhadzimu township and the border-crossing trade. High foot traffic daily from truck drivers, traders, and border workers. One of Zimbabwe’s most consistent informal offal retail markets despite its remote location.
- Hwange local butcheries β serving the mining community. Feet and neck demand particularly strong as budget protein for shift workers buying daily.
- Gwanda town butcheries β small operators along Bradben Road serving community offal demand, currently supplied from Bulawayo.
- Victoria Falls town butcheries β serving both the resident population and tourism support workers with some fresh offal alongside whole processed birds.

What Offal Revenue Means for Zimbabwe’s Broiler Farmers
For a farmer selling 500 birds per cycle, offal is not a footnote. A batch of 500 broilers produces approximately 1,000 feet (50β60 kg), 500 gizzards (35β45 kg), 500 livers (25β35 kg), and 500 necks (40β55 kg). At current chicken offal prices (wholesale), this translates to an additional $130 to $220 in offal revenue per cycle. Most small-scale farmers never sell whole live birds to a single buyer and lose this cash.
However, those who slaughter and process their own birds, or who have arrangements with local abattoirs to retain offal rights, are in a position to capture this margin directly. Understanding the full cost structure of poultry production is essential to running a profitable operation. The market access guide on this site covers how to structure sales arrangements that include offal as a separate revenue line.
Conclusion
Zimbabweβs offal market is growing. Whole bird prices continue to rise on the back of feed input cost pressures. Therefore, more households are shifting toward offal as their primary chicken protein. Also, the gango culture driving that shift is accelerating, not slowing.
Farmers and processors can build reliable offal supply chains now by listing themselves through the verified partner directories on this site. This will position them at the centre of one of Zimbabweβs most resilient food markets.
